Understanding Myofascial Release
V
How is MFR different to massage?
MFR is different from massage and traditional stretching.
Rather than using force or working quickly through the tissues, MFR uses gentle, sustained pressure and allows time for the body to respond.
During treatment, I follow your body’s natural responses rather than forcing a particular movement or release.
The approach is:
• Gentle and sustained
• Never forced
• Guided by your body’s response
• Individual to you
What Are Myofascial Restrictions?
Fascia is a continuous connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and other structures throughout the body.
Areas of restriction can develop following things such as:
• Injury or surgery
• Repetitive strain
• Changes in movement or posture
• Physical stress
• Periods of tension
These restrictions may contribute to feelings of tension, stiffness or reduced ease of movement.
Because fascia is interconnected throughout the body, the area where you feel discomfort isn’t always the only area involved. This is why MFR takes a whole-body approach rather than focusing solely on the area that feels uncomfortable.
Can MFR Help With My Issue?
People come to MFR for many different reasons. Some experience ongoing tension or stiffness, while others notice restricted movement, discomfort or patterns that seem to keep returning.
MFR works with areas of fascial restriction and tension within the body rather than focusing only where you feel discomfort.
Because every person is different, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment or guaranteed outcome. Your session is guided by what I find and how your body responds.
MFR may be suitable if you are experiencing:
• Back, neck or shoulder tension
• Restricted movement or stiffness
• Persistent muscular or fascial tension
• Postural or movement restrictions
• Tension following injury or surgery
• A desire to improve movement and body awareness
If you’re unsure whether MFR is appropriate for you, you’re welcome to contact me before booking.

What Can I Expect During an MFR Session?
Every MFR session is individual and guided by how your body feels and responds on the day.
We begin with a brief conversation about how you’re feeling, any changes you’ve noticed and what you’d like to focus on.
I may assess your posture and movement before treatment begins. During the session, I use gentle, sustained pressure and work with areas of fascial restriction I feel within the body.
I may ask what you’re noticing as we work. This helps us stay connected to your body’s responses rather than simply focusing on the area where you feel discomfort.
There is no need to force anything. The treatment is slow, responsive and tailored to you.
What to wear
MFR is performed directly on the skin without oils or lotions, so appropriate clothing may be required depending on the area being treated.
The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach® is a whole-body, hands-on approach that uses gentle, sustained pressure to work with areas of fascial restriction.
Rather than focusing only on where you feel discomfort, the approach considers how restrictions throughout the body may influence movement, tension and comfort.
Treatment is guided by what I feel within the tissues and how your body responds during the session, allowing each treatment to be individual to you.
I have completed over 400 hours of advanced training in the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach®️ and have reached Expert Level.
Starting your MFR Journey?
For long-standing patterns of tension or restriction, I generally recommend starting with three sessions. This gives us time to work progressively with your body and to notice how you respond between sessions. Everyone responds differently, so there is no fixed number of treatments that applies to everyone.
If you have read through this page and feel that the MFR approach is right for you, you can book your session below.
